Kitty Hawk NCIn the Fall of 1900, the Wright brothers (Wilbur and Orville) stepped ashore in Kitty Hawk Village and shortly thereafter made history as the discoverers of flight.  Three years after choosing this remote fishing village on the Outer Banks, they would indeed make history by successfully flying their “heavier than air” flying machine. Kitty Hawk would forever afterwards be known as the “birthplace of  aviation”, although the actual flight took place four miles south from a location in what is now Kill Devil Hills.

Today, Kill Hawk is one of the largest, most populated areas of real estate on the Outer Banks, where, on the Oceanside can be found thousands of rental homes and many restaurants and shoppes.

Along the Albemarle Sound, however, you will find life much as it used to be – a village off the beaten path with shaded lanes winding along the marshes.  Quaint clapboard cottages and fishing boats can be found lining a series of canals that lead to the open waters of the sound  -- reminiscent of the way in which Outer Bankers used to live.
